The countdown
Domain expiration is not instant death. It unfolds over weeks through distinct phases, each with different costs and recovery options. Understanding this timeline determines whether you lose a domain permanently or recover it for pennies.
The grace period varies wildly between registrars. Cloudflare gives you 40 days. Some ccTLDs like .de give you zero. During redemption, registrars charge premium recovery fees that can exceed a thousand pounds. After pending delete, the domain drops to the open market where automated drop-catching services register it within milliseconds.
This is why PulseStack alerts start at 90 days. Early warning gives your finance team time to approve budgets, your operations team time to verify payment methods, and your legal team time to ensure the correct entity holds the registration.
Combined with SSL certificate monitoring and DNS record monitoring, domain expiry tracking covers the foundational layer of your internet presence.
Domain resolves normally. Website, email, and all services operational.
Free tool
Enter any domain to see its registrar, registration date, expiry date, days remaining, and nameservers. Powered by RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS that delivers structured, reliable data directly from authoritative registrar databases.
Unlike legacy WHOIS tools that parse inconsistent text output, RDAP returns standardised JSON from every registrar. This means accurate expiry dates regardless of whether your domain is with GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap, or any other ICANN-accredited registrar.
The checker is completely free with no signup required. For continuous monitoring with automated alerts at six escalating stages, create a free PulseStack account with 50 monitors included.

Domain expiry is not a small-company problem. Enterprises, governments, and critical internet infrastructure have all been caught out.
Location check-in service lost their domain for several hours when an admin missed the renewal. Users could not access the app during the outage.
The registrar managing domains for Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo had an outage, briefly showing WHOIS records as expired for some of the largest domains on the internet.
Major anti-spam DNS blacklist domain expired. Email servers worldwide that relied on it suddenly rejected legitimate email, affecting millions of messages.
The city of Dallas let their domain expire. It was snatched by a domain squatter who put up inappropriate content on what was meant to be a government site.
From expiry countdown to nameserver hijack detection, PulseStack watches the critical details that registrar dashboards miss.
Six escalation stages from 90 days to 1 day. Early alerts go to email and Slack. Late alerts escalate to SMS, phone calls, and PagerDuty.
Modern structured queries to authoritative registrar databases. More reliable than WHOIS text parsing. Covers 1,500+ TLDs globally.
Detect unauthorised nameserver changes within minutes. The earliest indicator of domain hijacking or accidental misconfiguration.
Domains across GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap, Route 53, and any ICANN registrar. One dashboard for your entire portfolio.
Get notified if a domain is transferred between registrars without your knowledge. Critical for domains managed by agencies or partners.
Domain expiry alongside SSL certificates, HTTP uptime, DNS records, ports, and cron jobs. One dashboard, one alert pipeline, one team.
The safety net
Every registrar offers auto-renewal. Most teams enable it and assume the problem is solved. But auto-renewal depends on a chain of things going right: the credit card on file must be valid, the billing email must be deliverable, the registrar account must not be locked, and the domain must not be flagged for a policy violation. Break any link and the renewal silently fails.
Corporate credit cards expire. Finance teams issue new cards and update the obvious subscriptions but forget the registrar account that processes one charge per year. The renewal attempt fails, the registrar sends a notice to the billing email, and that email goes to a shared inbox that nobody checks.
Acquisitions and personnel changes create another failure mode. The engineer who originally registered the domain leaves the company. The registrar account is tied to their personal email. Password resets go nowhere. The domain silently ages toward expiry in an account nobody can access.
PulseStack checks your domain's actual RDAP registration data from outside your registrar. It does not care whether your auto-renewal is enabled, whether your credit card works, or whether your account is locked. It tells you the truth about when the domain expires, and alerts you with enough time to fix whatever went wrong.
