What is domain expiry monitoring?

Domain expiry monitoring continuously tracks the registration expiration dates of your domain names using RDAP and WHOIS protocols. PulseStack™ queries authoritative registrar databases to determine exactly when each domain expires and sends progressive alerts as the deadline approaches. This prevents the catastrophic scenario where a domain lapses and becomes available for anyone to register.

Why do domains expire even when auto-renewal is enabled?

Auto-renewal fails more often than people expect. The most common causes are expired payment cards on file, insufficient account balance, registrar account locked due to failed identity verification, DNS admin email bouncing so renewal notices never arrive, domains flagged for policy violations by the registrar, and registrar-specific issues like billing system outages. PulseStack acts as an independent safety net that monitors from outside your registrar, catching failures regardless of the cause.

What happens when a domain expires?

Domain expiration follows a multi-stage process. First, the domain enters a grace period (typically 0 to 45 days depending on the registrar) where you can still renew at the normal price. Then it enters a redemption period (typically 30 days) where recovery costs hundreds of pounds. After that, the domain enters pending delete status for 5 days, then drops and becomes available for public registration. Domain squatters and competitors use automated tools to snap up valuable expired domains within milliseconds of them dropping.

How does PulseStack check domain expiry dates?

PulseStack uses RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, which is the modern successor to WHOIS. RDAP provides structured JSON responses from authoritative registrar databases, making the data more reliable and consistent than legacy WHOIS text parsing. Each check queries the RDAP server for the domain's registration events, extracts the expiration date, calculates days remaining, and compares against your configured alert thresholds.

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

WHOIS is the legacy protocol for querying domain registration data, returning unstructured text that varies between registrars. RDAP is the IETF-standard replacement that returns structured JSON with consistent field names across all registrars. RDAP also supports HTTPS, authentication, and internationalised domain names. ICANN has mandated RDAP support for all accredited registrars. PulseStack uses RDAP as the primary lookup method with WHOIS as a fallback for registries that have not yet fully migrated.

How far in advance should I set domain expiry alerts?

PulseStack sends progressive alerts at 90, 60, 30, 14, 7, and 1 day before expiry by default. The 90-day alert gives your accounts or procurement team time to process renewal through corporate approval workflows. The 30-day alert is your primary action trigger. The 7-day and 1-day alerts are urgent escalations. For critical business domains, we recommend configuring escalation policies so that late-stage alerts trigger phone calls and PagerDuty incidents rather than just email.

Can I monitor domains registered with different registrars?

Yes. PulseStack monitors domains regardless of which registrar they are registered with. Whether your domains are spread across GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap, Google Domains, Amazon Route 53, or any ICANN-accredited registrar, PulseStack queries the authoritative RDAP servers for each TLD independently. Does domain monitoring detect nameserver changes?

Yes. PulseStack tracks the nameservers associated with each domain and alerts you if they change unexpectedly. Unauthorised nameserver changes are a common indicator of domain hijacking, where an attacker gains control of your domain and redirects traffic to their servers. Detecting this within minutes rather than hours can mean the difference between a contained incident and a full-scale data breach.

What is domain hijacking and how does monitoring help prevent it?

Domain hijacking occurs when an unauthorised party gains control of your domain registration, typically through social engineering the registrar, exploiting a compromised registrar account, or intercepting renewal expiry. The attacker changes nameservers to redirect all traffic, including email, to servers they control. Continuous monitoring detects the early signs: unexpected WHOIS changes, nameserver modifications, or registrar transfer initiation. Immediate alerts give you time to contact your registrar and dispute the change before damage compounds.

Can I monitor country-code TLDs like .co.uk and .de?

Yes. PulseStack supports monitoring for all major TLDs including generic TLDs like .com, .org, .net, new gTLDs like .io, .app, .dev, and country-code TLDs like .co.uk, .de, .fr, .jp, and .au. RDAP coverage varies by registry, so some ccTLDs use WHOIS fallback.
